“A Sailor Went to Sea” Lyrics

Ahoy, sailor! What do you see?
A sailor went to sea, sea, sea
To see what she could see, see, see,
But all that she could see, see, see
Was the bottom of the deep blue sea, sea, sea!

A pirate!

A pirate went to sea, sea, sea
To see what he could see, see, see,
But all that he could see, see, see
Was a sailor swimming in the sea, sea, sea!

A diver!

A diver went to sea, sea, sea
To see what she could see, see, see,
But all that she could see, see, see
Was a sailor swimming and a pirate swimming in the sea, sea, sea!

A ship captain!

A captain went to sea, sea, sea
To see what he could see, see, see,
But all that he could see, see, see
Was a sailor swimming, and a pirate swimming, and a diver swimming in the sea, sea, sea!

All aboard!

Description

Have you ever heard of this awesome singing game for kids? “A Sailor Went to Sea” is a classic song for children that can be played even by the youngest ones! Like many other children’s songs, this one also has many variations. However, the main topic always remains the same: it tells a story about a sailor who went to the sea.

In this version of the story, your little one will get to accompany a few interesting characters on their adventures. First, it’s Cowy the Cow, who is a great sailor and explorer, as she travels the sea hoping to see its many wonders. She has a nice blue boat with strong, white sails that help her navigate. As she’s enjoying a clear day on the boat, Cowy is also looking for something interesting to see. So she grabs her spyglass and starts scanning the horizon. After a while of looking around, all that she could see was just the bottom of the deep blue sea!

Then, Elliot the Panda, who is a fierce pirate, appears! He’s looking out through his spyglass. As he checks out the horizon for interesting things, all he can finally see is Cowy, the sailor, swimming in the sea, and he swiftly decides to join her!

Right after Elliot jumps in the water, Lisa the Cat appears. She’s a diver who’s exploring the depths of the sea, she even has a green diving helmet, what a cool thing! Lisa is also looking for something exciting, so she takes out her binoculars to explore around. However, all that she can see is a sailor and a pirate swimming in the sea!

After a while, a big cruise ship appears. Inside is Billy the Chick, who’s the important ship captain in charge of the vessel. He’s looking around through his binoculars, scanning the area, and suddenly he sees a sailor, a pirate, and a diver swimming in the sea! Lisa had joined the group of swimmers! He extends a rope ladder for them and invites them all aboard his ship. A great end to a fantastic story!

Sing the song with your little one a couple of times. The catchy rhythm will make it easier to learn and to remember. By doing this, you’ll be practicing pronunciation and vocabulary in English.

You can use this song to teach your little one about jobs in English. Go over the characters on the song and their jobs, and explain a bit more about each one. You can even talk about modes of transport, in this case, about water vehicles like boats, ships, and cruisers, and explore their differences in size and uses.

But, how can you make the most out of this song for kids?

This song is widely used as a clapping game for kids. This means that you can accompany the words in the song (“sea, sea, sea,” and “see, see, see”) with clapping sounds to make a game out of it! Definitely, a great exercise for the youngest children to improve their motor skills.

For older children, you can use this as a jump-rope rhyme. So, next time you go to the park with a big group, take a rope with you and don’t hesitate to go jumping the rope to the tune of this fun song!

Finally, this nursery rhyme for kids is also great to improve memory skills, since it’s important to remember the characters who appear as the song progresses. You can even try to make your own lyrics and add more characters to the song!

Now, let’s have fun at sea!
