Meena Harris Joins Lingokids #PositiveParenting Series To Discuss Empowering and Raising Socially-Engaged Children

Playlearning™ app’s Lingokids #PositiveParenting Series most recent webisode tackled the subject of empowering young activists and raising socially engaged children. The conversation was joined by author, founder of the Phenomenal Woman Action Campaign, and niece of Vice President-elect, Meena Harris, and led by the app’s Product Owner of Kids Media, Meredith Chasney.

“I think it’s important for parents to have the confidence that what works for them is okay— do what works for you“ shared Harris. “We shouldn’t underestimate children’s ability to understand and have wise interesting insights that parents can learn from kids every day. For example, during the Black Lives Matter protests, there were ways to talk about what was happening and what was age-appropriate and to explain what was going on in the world.”

During the conversation, Harris and Chasney spoke about how children can become compassionate leaders at work, involved members of their community, dependable friends at school, and caring brothers and sisters at home. “No activity when demonstrating these values of activism is too small, whether it’s in your living room or community garden, holiday gifting and donating to a food bank, there are so many acts of kindness,” shared Harris.

The hosts discussed the importance of taking time out of the daily routine to find teachable moments for kids and find ways to be engaged and active while managing new emotions. With consistency being key to creating an impact, ways included writing letters to decision-makers and how to approach and progress along the path to making a change in your community, volunteering as a family, donating to children who might need toys for the holidays, and other smaller lessons like learning about the importance of recycling when taking out the trash.

With the goal of finding a safe way for children to be aware of what’s going on in the world and provide them a fresh perspective of right and wrong, Harris suggested for parents to be kind to themselves and stop putting pressure on themselves while juggling work and home-learning and to find gratitude and know that what they’re doing is enough, without judgment.
