How to Teach English to Children Through Their Senses

Children usually enjoy learning English much more when they can interact with the objects they are being taught about. Preschoolers are kinesthetic learners. That’s why looking, touching, and smelling the object they are learning about, and also being able to tell how it feels, helps them easily memorize its name and purpose.

Ideas To Start Learning English By Using The Senses

1. Gather Different Objects

Place the objects on the table and make a “word bank”. This list will have all the words your child might use to describe how the object looks, feels, and smells. Use words like: “fluffy,” “rough,” “crinkly,” “sticky,” etc. To make it more playful, have your child describe the object as you take a guess on what it could be.

2. Make A List Of Objects

On a piece of paper put all the objects you can think of in English. For this, download an English learning app for kids
such as
Lingokids and use the objects you have learned while playing, then, with your little one, describe how they look and how they should feel.

3. Read “Touching And Feeling” Books

These books are gold for early ELLs. They are a great help when it comes to learning vocabulary to describe textures of objects. Check out Usborne’s series of books. In these, the main protagonist is a mouse looking for something and, as soon as he thinks he found it, he realizes it’s too bobbly, hairy, or fluffy.

4. Use Your Surroundings

Go outside with your little one and practice describing your surroundings. Ask questions such as “What can you smell?”, and then describe what they perceive. This is a great way to also practice learning about the senses!

Now, let’s get to know your surroundings and practice English using your senses!
