Has your child tried counting in English? It’s easy and fun! Learning numbers is an important way for children to start developing mathematical skills. As they grow up, they will learn to apply mathematical thinking in all areas of their lives from problem-solving, to making observations about the world around them. But for now, let’s start just start with counting! For beginners, the best way to start learning numbers in English is to focus on numbers one to ten.
In the video Teacher Meredith has a number song for us! She helps us count from one to seven. Watch the video several times. Have your child sing along with Teacher Meredith. Then practice these numbers with a game! Tell your children to hold up the number of fingers that you say. Once they get the hang of it, let them be the one to tell you how many fingers to hold up! Incorporate other English words that they know into the game related to clothes, colors, and food. Can they find four socks in the laundry room? Have them look for two green items outside. Can they find two vegetables at the store?
When kids understand how numbers are a part of their everyday lives, they’ll begin to notice more about the world around them. Each time your child learns a new number have them count all the way up to that number in English. Everyday you can add a new number until they can count to one hundred!
