Practice clothe's names and colors in English with this fun and classic hand clapping game!

“Miss Mary Mack” Lyrics

Miss Mary Mack, Mack, Mack
All dressed in black, black, black
With silver buttons, buttons, buttons
All down her back, back, back
She asked her mother, mother, mother
For fifty cents, cents, cents
To see the elephants, elephants, elephants
Jump over the fence, fence, fence
They jumped so high, high, high
They touched the sky, sky, sky
And they never came back, back, back
Till the Fourth of July, ly, ly!

Miss Mary Sue, Sue, Sue
All dressed in blue, blue, blue
With silver laces, laces, laces
Tied on her shoes, shoes, shoes
She asked her mother, mother, mother
For fifty cents, cents, cents
To see the elephants, elephants, elephants
Jump over the fence, fence, fence
They jumped so high, high, high
They touched the sky, sky, sky
And they never came back, back, back
Till the Fourth of July, ly, ly!

About the Song

Is your child fond of clapping games? The popular song “Miss Mary Mack” is one of the most popular childhood tunes to have a fun time playing and clapping! Clapping games are an excellent way for children to improve their hand-eye coordination and to work on their motor skills. These games usually involved motor planning skills, which are key part in processes such as learning how to write or how to get dressed.

This song for kids is a well-known hand clapping game that’s very popular at campsites, school recess, and children’ parties. The little ones really enjoy the challenge of learning the clapping choreography to play later with family and friends.

The origin of Miss Mary Mack is unknown, however, it’s believed to be very old. Its catchy rhythm has turned it into a childhood favorite, so much that’s still played today! In this song video for children, your little one will enjoy a fun day at the park with Miss Mary Mack as she and her mother celebrate a very important day: the 4th of July!

In this occasion, Mary is accompanied by her mother, and they’re at a park, celebrating the 4th of July, also known as Independence Day, which is a federal holiday in the United States that commemorates the Declaration of Independence.

Mother and daughter are happily enjoying the celebration surrounded by lots of people, balloons, and lots of confetti. As they celebrate, Lisa the Cat, Billy the Chick, and Cowy the Cow show up, they have a very important task during the celebration: they’re part of the marching band! Each one of the three friends is wearing a beautiful blue, red, and gold hat with a white feather. It must be a uniform! Lisa is a baton twirler, while Billy plays a flute and Cowy plays a trumpet.

As the friends go marching, Mary Mack dances to their music. She can be seen wearing a black dress with silver buttons down her back. Then, we can meet two more people in the crowd. It’s Miss Mary Sue and her mom! Mary Sue is wearing a beautiful blue dress and blue shoes with silver laces. It looks so pretty!

Watch the video and sing the song with your little one. Besides being a great opportunity to practice pronunciation, it can also be an excellent way to learn and practice the colors in English.

Ask your little one to describe the colors and practice the names of the clothes that appear in the video. Make sure to ask a few follow-up questions to monitor their learning. For example, you can ask: “What color is the shirt that Mary Sue’s mom is wearing?” or “What is Mary Mack’s mom wearing?” Then, you can move one and go over the name of musical instruments in English. Ask your little what instrument would they want to play in a marching band. Encourage them to give you simple answers to explain themselves.

Finally, you can even use this rhyme for kids with babies and toddlers. Even though they’re probably too young to play the clapping game correctly, they’ll have a great time listening to the song and starting to work on their motor skills while learning how to play!
