Its origin is not recent at all. In fact, the song was first published on May 24th, 1830, by Sarah Josepha Hale and John Roulstone in the form of a poem, and it’s believed to have been inspired by a real incident!
The story says that a little girl called Mary Sawyer had a little lamb that one day she took with her to school. This, of course, wasn’t as common so it inspired the poem. As the years passed, the song has had many different versions written, but it has always remained true to its essence.

First, in the morning, Mary is sitting at the table with her lamb. They’re having breakfast before heading out to school. Since the lamb was always right by Mary’s side, it decided to follow her to school.
At the school, Mary found out that taking her lamb to school was against the rules, and she got very sad. However, all the children at school were laughing and playing with the lamb. They took it to the playground, where they played on the roundabout, on the seesaw, on the climbers, and on the slide during the recess.
After, the lamb went into the classroom and sat on Mary’s desk, where it started to read a book. The teacher was very surprised and impressed by this and, after seeing that the lamb could read and write, the teacher changed the rules, and the lamb was allowed to stay at school. A happy ending!
