Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes

Learn the names of the most important face and body parts in English with a fun, simple song!

About the Song

Bodies are not only responsible for every action people perform, but they also have a huge impact on the learning process during childhood. From learning how to eat, how to walk, or how to talk, being aware of all body parts is enriching for childhood development. The song “Head, shoulders, knees, and toes” is a great start for the youngest of the house to learn this topic!

At first, children learn about their bodies naturally by listening to their parents and caregivers. This way they learn that they wave hello with the hand, or eat with their mouths. This is the first approach to learning body parts in infancy.

Then, as a child grows up, their curiosity grows as well and they start to discover more and more about their bodies and what they’re capable of. It’s at this moment when it’s quite useful for them to know about this topic, even using it to learn English as a second or foreign language.

Children songs in English are one of the best activities to do so, and this song is one of the best! With it, children can learn the name of the body parts in English as they sing and dance to a fun tune.

In this modern version of the classic song, your child will accompany Cowy the Cow, Lisa the Cat, Billy the Bird, and Elliot the Panda as they dance around pointing to a few of the most important body and face parts. First, they mention four of the main parts of the body: head, shoulders, knees, and toes. Then, they mention four parts of the face in English: eyes, ears, mouth, and nose.

Sing the song a few times with your little one, and then go over the parts of the body that are mentioned in the song. Explain that the head is one of the most important parts of the body, it has the brain, which handles what happens in the rest of the body! You can also mention that shoulders are important because allow us to move our arms in many directions, while knees and toes allow us to walk and keep our balance while doing it.

After, review face parts in English! Explain to your little one that eyes allow people to see, they are related to sight. Ears are related to hearing, which helps people listen to different sounds. The mouth allows people to eat, so everyone can grow up strong and healthy. And, last but not least, the nose helps people smell all the scents in the world.

When listening to the song and watching the video, make sure to practice the dance. This will be a great way to ensure that your little one learns the words in English to enrich their vocabulary.
