Description

Family is an important part of every child’s life. They’re there for kids right from the start and have an essential role in their upbringing. The Finger Family song helps the little ones learn about this topic in a fun, engaging way!

Talking about family members comes easily for children whose native language is English. However, children learning English as a second or foreign language might not have it so easy. In this case, talking about members of the family is more challenging.

This is the moment when songs for kids come in handy: they help kids acquire new vocabulary in a simple way, pretty similar to how they learn their native tongue. Through songs, children not only learn about rhythm and pronunciation, but also practice different parts of speech like pace and tone.

The Family Finger song is a fun nursery rhyme that talks about the family members in English
through easy lyrics and an engaging visual story. First, there’s Daddy Finger, who is the father. Next, there is the mother, Mommy Finger. Then, Sister Finger and Brother Finger show up, they are a girl a boy who are siblings. Finally, there’s a third sibling: Baby Finger, who’s the youngest of the family! The whole family is introduced through a rhyming game that consists of asking the person “Where are you?”, followed by a friendly “yoo-hoo” sound to call for them. Then, the person replies “Here I am, right in front of you”.

Listen to the song a couple of times with your child and sing the lyrics together. This easy exercise is great to improve pronunciation in English, to broaden the vocabulary, and can even be helpful to start getting a grasp of the basics of English grammar.

If your little one is old enough to read, you can watch the video together and read the lyrics as you sing them. Reading is crucial for a child’s cognitive development and it’s a good thing to do when learning a new language like English. Additionally, take advantage of this video to use it to learn more topics like colors, parts of the face, or even the personal pronouns in English. Encourage your child to describe each one of the characters that appear in the video. You can do so by asking questions in English such as: “What is Daddy Finger wearing? A shirt!”, or “What is Sister Finger doing? She’s listening to some music!”, which can be great conversation starters.

Finally, you can keep learning offline by doing your own finger puppet show at home inspired on the song! You can turn each one of your child’s finger into puppets to make a whole family. You can even use your own family members to personalize the song while playing with the finger puppets.

It’s time to read the lyrics and start having fun!
