Games for Preschool Children

It is not always easy to motivate children to improve and enhance certain skills. In a society where technology has taken over, it is not surprising to see children searching for an electronic device before anything else. Children will often become attached to these tablets, games consoles, and cell phones throughout large periods of time.

What has happened then to the more traditional games? What about those games where you had to run around and jump up and down? Where have those laughs and small arguments gone? The reality is that you can still play these games, you just need to help children to learn the rules and you can still have a great time playing games and learning new things.

Fun Games for Preschoolers!

Blind Mans Bluff

A game that has been around for hundreds of years. This game is very simple and the children will have lots of fun. The person who is “it” is blindfolded and has to find the other players.

Try to find a playing area that is not too big and that has as few hazards as possible. The idea of the game is to enhance spatial awareness, hearing skills, and coordination. This game is a great way to get moving and to have a great time.

Musical Chairs

This game will undoubtedly form a part of most adults’ memories. A very simple game but one that can create fantastic moments of fun and laughter. For this game, you need to place chairs, enough chairs for the number of players participating, into a circle facing outwards.

Then, as music plays, boys and girls must move around the outside of the chairs whilst someone else removes one of the chairs from the circle. Once the music stops, everyone must find a chair to sit on as quickly as possible. As you can imagine, the person who doesn’t have a chair to sit on is eliminated.

Musical chairs is a good game to practice reflexes, improve hearing, and to improve coordination skills as you have to be as quick as possible. Another advantage is that this game can be played absolutely anywhere.

Hoops

A very simple game. All you need is a stick and some hoops. Put the stick in the ground and the object of the game is to throw the hoops over the stick. Try to use a distance where children can easily get the hoops onto the stick and win points.

This game is good for children to improve their coordination and motor skills as although it seems easy, it is not as simple as it looks.

Body parts

This game is particularly suitable for younger children who are still learning the names for parts of the body. The aim of the game is to reinforce children’s knowledge of the body in a fun way, avoiding any physical activity.

To play the game, one child must point to a part of their body and whoever calls the correct name first, wins the point. At the end of the game, whoever has the most points, wins the game.

For some children, the competitive aspect of the game can be stressful, so you can consider playing the game without keeping score. This game can be very useful for teachers who are looking for simple games to play that back up the theory work done inside of the classroom.

All of these games have different variants that adults sometimes modify depending on their own preferences. At the end of the day, you are looking for children to have a good time whilst they try to improve or enhance specific skills and abilities. Thanks to these types of games, children will spend less time glued to a screen and being taken hostage by new technologies.

We are living in a time where technology has become an essential part of modern society, which is why it is so important to find the right balance between being completely reliant on these new technologies and being too distant to embrace the opportunities available from these modern gadgets. It is up to parents to make sure that this balance is kept, as there are so many options currently available to children.

These old-fashioned games shouldn’t disappear from our parks or playgrounds as they are fun, children can learn from them and above all else, they will provide children with fantastic opportunities to create new friendships.
